Fairfield County Homes for Sale: June 2012

Easy Commute to Manhattan with a Coastal Lifestyle in Black Rock CT

Black Rock ConnecticutBlack Rock, Connecticut attracts Manhattan commuters who yearn to live in a waterfront community on Long Island Sound, but don’t want a suburban environment. This Fairfield County community has been the focus of two articles by the New York Times over the past few years, “Living in Black Rock, Connecticut: A Community with Spirit and an Edge” (August 8, 2004) and “If You’re Thinking of Living In St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea, Connecticut: At Peninsula’s End, a Waterside Enclave” (June 9, 2002).  It is a community of creative people with passionate and varied cultural interests including art, music and restaurants.

Black Rock is served by the Fairfield Metro train station which has Express trains to Grand Central that take just over an hour of train travel.  Most of Black Rock is within a one mile radius of the train station.

Black Rock has a rich history dating back to its heritage as a colonial seaport.  In the late 1800’s wealthy merchants built beautiful homes in Black Rock in the style of Newport, Rhode Island.  Grovers Hill, affords spectacular elevated views of Long Island Sound.  Other areas of Black Rock are also sought after for their direct waterfront properties and deep water docks.  Homes in Black Rock sell for significantly less than homes in other Fairfield County coastal towns.  With a population of less than 9,000 and an area of less than one square mile, there are only a limited number of homes for sale each year ranging from less than $250,000 to over $2 million.

Black Rock combines the beauty of a shoreline community with the sophistication of an urban setting.  A number of residents commute to Manhattan, while others work from home.  Residents enjoy walking along the park at St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea and along the Ash Creek tidal estuary.  There are few other places where you can walk for three miles on sidewalks while looking at water views most of the way. There is also a dog park where neighbors gather while their pets play and an active recreation park with tennis courts.

If you love the water, you can moor your sailboat at private clubs such as the  Black Rock Yacht Club, Fayerweather Yacht Club, or rent a slip at Captain’s Cove Marina.  The Arts & Entertainment District on Fairfield Avenue provide many options for dining, music, espresso bars, art galleries, and shopping.  Black Rock is an artsy and eclectic community where newcomers are quickly integrated into the neighborhood as they join together on various projects and events.   Black Rock is known for its vibrant community spirit.
