Black Rock Rotary Club Now Official

Bridgeport, CT (May 11, 2010) - As the newest official Rotary Club in Connecticut, the Black Rock Rotary will be hosting their Charter Dinner at Brooklawn Country Club on June 2, 2010.  With over 30 new members in the group, Black Rock will be the first Rotary group to be chartered in the Fairfield County district in over 10 years. The Charter is a significant milestone, as it makes official the club's status at the international level. At a recent Tuesday meeting over wine and hors d'oeuvres, Black Rock Rotarians discussed their interest in the group and reasons for joining.  Founding club president Rob Medvey says,  "I recognized a certain energy in the community, centered around the newly re-opened library, and wanted to contribute to making Black Rock an even more vibrant and thriving place to be." Already active in Fairfield and Bridgeport, the group raised over $10,000 for the Black Rock Library at their Jazz Night fundraiser, and has plans to continue its efforts to fund the Teen Space and teen programming at the library.  Club president-elect Christina Orlyn explained the Black Rock Rotary connection with the library as a sustained commitment, "As a group we are eager to help develop and fund programs to harness the untapped talents of teens in the community, and to assist them in their development, socially and educationally, as they become young adults." Rotary International is a volunteer organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, and help to build goodwill and peace in the world. There are approximately 1.2 million Rotary club members belonging to nearly 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.  Founded in Chicago in 1905, Rotary celebrated 100 years of service in 2005.
